My father came home just now, in a bit of a mood. He's a moody dork, so it's not surprising. The point being that I recognized his vulnerability and showed him the incredibly generous donations and hundreds of compassionate comments left by all of you wonderful people. I am so shamelessly manipulative. He started to cry, carrying on about how Schro is the perfect cat and he loves Schro so much and Schro is so selfless. All of which is true. More importantly, he then said that he would pay the rest of the bill- not nearly so large an amount now.

So. We're all off the hook now, especially Schro. And there's no way it would have been possible without all of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. You are love.

To those of you who were in the process of getting together donations, please use that funding for the benefit of your own loved ones, be they furred or not, for your personal pleasure, or for your charitable cause of choice. My cup runneth over.

I will try to get pictures as soon as possible...I'm reluctant to take pictures of how he looked when last I saw him, because it was sickening and heartbreaking at once. But I'll do my best.

God, Goddess, whatever you do or don't believe in, bless you all. Don't speak of being ashamed of being human- you are what makes being human wonderful. And I will never forget it.

Hurray, that really makes me almost weep with happiness you know? I'm seriously tearing up. I'm glad to hear your kitty is going to be okay and that you can afford the vet bills now. Cheers!

Oh, I am so glad to hear that. I was worried, but I was hopeful that between LJ and other sources (the eBay auction sounded like a good idea!) you would be all right. I am so glad your father is willing to help you - I got a tear in my eye when I read that, not kidding - and that Schro will be all right.

Say what you will about not being ashamed to be human - I often wonder how it is that people are capable of such love, and yet such great hate and evil, as well. Humans are one of only 2 or 3 species on the planet who are known to kill for fun. What we do out of love and kindness compared to other species, well, I don't have statistics, but I'm sure it's pretty incredible, too - as are other species' as well, like those lions who protected that girl in Ethiopia a few weeks ago.

Or the animals who adopt orphan humans, etc.

People are both loving and hateful, good and evil... that amazes me, too. But I still hope that bastard or bastards is/are brought to justice for what they did.

All my best to you and Schro, and Timmy, Alex, and Dana continue their good thoughts, as well.

I suppose i'm a bit weird in that to me the good is always bigger than the bad. Keeps me going, anyway. The good was definitely bigger than the bad here.

Glad to hear that your kitty is doing well.

I'm use to having large vet bills. Since I own horses, and had to have one put down recently. Lost one of my best horses a few years ago to colic, they did surgery, he had complications, had to have more surgeries, at the end his vet bill was way over the $10,000 mark. Took out a personal loan. Horse was on a year of stall rest, and the vet gave us a okay to start working again slowly, and then after having west nile vaccinations, he came down with it, went into seizures, and the vet came out and put him down. The vet said that he probably came down with the west nile since his immune system was destroyed.

Everything was going great and then boom, disaster struck.

Hopefully this doesn't happen to your kitty.

Thank you for the reality check...I am hoping for the best, but life will do what it will, I suppose.

[info]painthorselover

July 4 2005, 20:32:07 UTC 6 years ago

Sorry about giving the reality check, but after losing horses to lightening, 2 horses to west nile, and having one put to sleep because she broke her hip, and there was nothing that they could do for her it's hard to have a positive outlook on life.

But I did hear about another kitty that was severely burned, it's owners decided to try and grill it, and the neighbors tried to save it, but I think it died. I can't remeber, but I seriously think that those type of people should be bound and tied up, and started on fire just to see how it feels to have your body with 2nd and 3rd degrees burns.

I live on a ranch where we have horses and cattle, and I still have problems dealing with death, although I've dealt with it for many yrs, you never do learn how to deal with it, I think it just makes you numb.

[info]city_glitter

July 4 2005, 20:47:02 UTC 6 years ago

No, I'm grateful for the reality check. I know life isn't all happiness and flowers. I do hope for the best, though. Because I don't think death ever actually gets easier, not even when you've gone through all the effort to accept your own mortality. I understand where you're coming from, I think.

I'm so happy to hear that you've gotten so much support from internet people. I've seen my share of awful "save-my-pet-plz" scam artists on the internet but when I read what happened to your Schro my heart just broke.

I don't even know you but I feel like I should send you and Schro something or... I don't know. I just feel so awful about what happened to him, but I'm so glad that there are lots of people out there who feel the way I do about a stranger's cat.

Im so glad your father and fellow LJer's were able to show enough compassion to help foot the bill for the henious acts that were done to an innocent loving animal. I wish i could afford to help out but my budget doesnt allow it. Ill say a few prayers for your cat and you. Im sure with all the advances in medicine he'll be okay. I hope one day he'll be back to his loving and playful self.

I found your story from [info]alphaloria

again im so sorry, but im glad he's made it through all of this.

I'm so glad the money situation is off your mind now. Please keep us updated on Schro's condition.

Make sure you take care of yourself along the way. You'll be better able to handle Schro's recovery if you're healthy, rested and strong.

I found you through [info]zillah975... I was going to send you a donation, but my credit cards don't have the leeway, and now I see that your dad's taken care of the rest. I really hope you guys find the person who did this. No one should suffer what your cat has gone through and will continue to go through. My cat's an insane little fuzzball, but I still love him (his name is Falstaff). He likes to go outside, since we got him from outside (he was living under the porch when we adopted him).

Isn't it amazing what the Internet and the closeness of LJ and other sites like it can do?

[info]city_glitter

July 4 2005, 21:44:10 UTC 6 years ago

Yeah, it really is incredible. It amazes me that people are still so cynical about LJ. I guess none of them ever have a crisis like this.

Thank you for the well-wishes. We will do our best to find the perpetrator and bring him to justice.

Thank God that the money worries are over now and you can concentrate all your energies on Schro and getting him well again. I friended you, I hope that's ok. I want to be able to keep up to date on how he and you are doing and offer any help if something is needed that I could do for you both. In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery for Schro, and good health for you are sent your way, and will continue to be. Also I would like to say a thanks of my own to all the people that responed to you with kind words and prayers and donations, and also to you [info]city_glitter, I was feeling so angry about the meaness and evil that we humans can do that I had temporarily forgotten about the extreme kindnesses we are also capable of. Thanks to all of you!

July 4 2005, 22:49:53 UTC 6 years ago

Your poor dad. It's bad enough when a loved one is badly hurt, but when the bill seems unsurmountable and you're supposed to be the one in charge, the one to make things better, and it seems like you can't... I too am the daughter of a moody dork, and the balance between emotion and trying to be 'the man' and tough it out can be hard on everyone involved.

I'm glad things worked out so that he can cover the rest and neither of you lose a beloved pet.

[info]city_glitter

July 4 2005, 23:02:44 UTC 6 years ago

Thank you. I'm glad they did too. I wish he would find other ways to deal with his emotions sometimes, but I love him for who he is just as he does me, and this turned out well enough. :)

I'm so relieved to read that both you and your darling Schro are doing better. On the one hand, the level of human cruelty is staggering, but look at how human kindness can vanquish it when we put our minds and hearts to it.

If it's alright with you, I've friended you, as I would like to follow both Schro's and your progress. If my donation represents an overage, please feel free to use it as you see fit -- a reward fund, or perhaps just to buy treats for both of you.

Consider donating any excess, or encouraging others to donate to IMOM.org, an organization that exists for the purpose of helping with emergency vet bills for those who can't otherwise afford them.

I only learned about it this weekend, in the context of discussing your situation with friends.
